About Budget Dads

Budget Dads is a personal finance and lifestyle resource built specifically for single dads. We cover practical, real-world strategies for raising kids on one income — without burning out or going broke. Whether you need help stretching your grocery budget, finding affordable childcare, rebuilding your credit after divorce, or just figuring out how to give your kids a great childhood on a tight budget, you are in the right place.

Who Is Behind Budget Dads

My name is Jared Lewis. I am a single dad, K-12 educator, and content creator based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I know what it feels like to watch your bank account drain faster than your paycheck hits, to stress about back-to-school shopping, to wonder how you are going to cover the electric bill and still put food on the table this week.

When I became a single dad, nobody handed me a financial playbook for this situation. There were plenty of general personal finance blogs out there, but almost none of them spoke to the specific reality of raising kids alone on one teacher’s income — managing child-related expenses, navigating legal costs, keeping the lights on, and somehow still trying to build a future for my kids. I had to figure it out the hard way, through trial, error, spreadsheets, and a whole lot of Sunday night budget reviews.

Budget Dads is the resource I wish had existed when I started. Everything I share here comes from lived experience — real numbers, real mistakes, and real wins. I am not a certified financial advisor. I am a dad who learned to make every dollar count and wants to help other dads do the same.

Why Budget Dads Exists

Single dads are an underserved community in the personal finance space. Most money blogs are written for two-income households or focus on general budgeting without addressing the unique pressures single fathers face — child support, sole custody costs, the emotional weight of being the only provider, and the guilt that comes with saying no to your kids when money is tight.

This site exists to change that. Budget Dads is a place where real talk meets real strategy. No fluff, no condescension, no advice that only works if you already have money. Just honest, actionable guidance from someone who has been exactly where you are.

My Approach to Money

I believe budgeting is not about restriction — it is about intention. When you know where every dollar is going before you spend it, you stop living paycheck to paycheck and start making real progress, even on a modest income. I use simple systems, not complicated apps or financial jargon. The goal is always clarity: know what you have, know what you owe, and make a plan.

I also believe that being a single dad on a budget does not mean your kids miss out. With the right strategies, you can give your kids a great childhood, build financial stability, and still have something left for yourself. That is what Budget Dads is all about.
